Radio 24 Malaysia Interview Summary

Nik explained that he has had an interest in interior design since he was 10 years old after seeing his mother at home rearranging the furniture. It was only when he was given an aquarium as a birthday gift, and began adding his own touches, that he developed his interest in interior design and continued his formal education in interior design in United Kingdom.

Nik noted that interior design was not his first choice of career. He wanted to become a veterinarian, as he loved animals. However, once he decided to pursue a career in design, he chose the appropriate school subjects, those were related to design. Later he moved to the United Kingdom and is now working full time as well as freelancing.

After receiving his Diploma qualification, Nik went on to obtain a BA and then an MA in interior design.

To date Nik is employed in an established company in the United Kingdom. With five years experience within the establishment, Nik has become successful as an interior designer in his own right.

Nik is lucky to be able to gain work experience in Malaysia and the UK. His design inspiration comes from what he has observed around him, through reading, looking at products and even listening to music. He also feels proud to be able to take part in the Interior Design Awards as a freelance, competing with other companies for the Northern Designer category. To date Nik continues to publish articles in ‘Concept For Living’ magazine. Following a question from a caller he said that he is thinking of opening his own company at some point in the future, and is currently proposing an interior design TV show to production companies in the UK or even Malaysia.

To be successful as an interior designer Nik noted that a designer has to be open minded to new ideas and trends, and to be confident when putting new ideas into their projects. As Nik noted to the second caller, hard work is key to being successful, yet a good work life balance is very important. Design is a competitive world a designer needs to be well educated and presented, as you are an advert to potential clients about yourself your product. A designer needs to be able stand out from the crowd and developing a reputation by word of mouth is also one key to success.

Nik explained that, at times, a designer can develop a mental block with ideas while working on a project. This can be avoided using good background research and developing a broad knowledge around the design subject. Discussing ideas with others is a healthy way of sharing and expanding design creativity. Nik is known for his ability to create laid back glamour on almost any budget. He explained that to get the wow factor you should mix designer pieces with inexpensive but interesting finds. Nik noted to the third caller, with regards to bedroom design, that to improve ones ‘romantic’ life you can introduce bold and sensuous colours. Clever lighting and mirrors help to produce a scheme of seduction. Always invest in a good quality bed. Nik explained that Europe produces many of the most high quality products in the world. When dealing with small spaces, good storage system solutions are vital to maximise the sense of space. Mirrors will brighten up any space and will help to create an illusion of spaciousness. Using colour and clever lighting will also have an effect. Finally, Niks advice to anyone wishing to be a designer is that solid, practical background knowledge is important. Designing is not only about pretty drawings and ideas, a designer also needs to bring the clients brief into reality. Good communication skills and good project and time management are key to a projects success.

With his love for music Nik dedicated the track ‘Hingga Ke Akhir Waktu’ by Francissca Peter, and ‘Selagi Kiamat Belum Tiba’ by Uji Rashid, to the listeners.
